Job Description

Business Development Manager - Power

Location: Ikeja, Lagos

Employment Type: Full-time

Demographics

Job Objective

  • The Business Development Manager for Power is responsible for driving the strategic growth and profitability of the Power category (Generators, Inverters, Solar Panels, Deep-Cycle Batteries, UPS, and Voltage Stabilizers).
  • This role requires a specialist who understands the shift from traditional petrol generators to renewable energy solutions.
  • The BDM Power will focus on project sales, alternative energy partnerships, inventory health (to prevent non-moving heavy stock), and establishing the brand as a trusted authority in the power sector.

Key Responsibilities

Revenue Growth & Profitability Management:

  • Own the Power category P&L, achieving 100% of the monthly sales target while driving 15% Year-on-Year (YoY) revenue growth, capitalizing on the growing demand for alternative energy.
  • Manage the margin mix between low-margin commodity generators and high- margin solar/inverter solutions.
  • Drive the contribution of alternative energy (Solar/Inverter) to 30% of total Power revenue by year-end, positioning the company as a leader in the energy transition.

New Business & Partnership Development:

  • Leverage industry connections to identify, negotiate, and onboard at least 2 new power brands or exclusive partnerships per quarter (e.g., premium generator brands, Tier-1 solar panel manufacturers, lithium battery suppliers).
  • Establish relationships with renewable energy developers, housing estates, and facility management companies to drive bulk/project sales.
  • Ensure new partnerships contribute at least 5% of total Power revenue by Q4.

Franchise & Channel Development:

  • Drive franchise channel contribution to achieve 15% of total Power revenue monthly.
  • Provide franchise partners with technical training to handle solar/inverter installations and after-sales service, enabling them to capture installation service revenue.

Inventory Health & Sell-Through Optimization:

  • Manage heavy inventory scientifically by ensuring 90% of SKUs maintain a healthy sell-through rate, with a strict focus on generator sizes (KVA) and battery shelf life.
  • Proactively liquidate slow-moving power SKUs (e.g., outdated generator models, expired batteries), reducing dead stock to less than 5% of total stock value.
  • Collaborate with procurement to ensure buying decisions align with seasonal demand (e.g., dry season vs. rainy season) and energy policy changes.

Trade Visit Impact & Market Execution:

  • Conduct minimum 2 store visits weekly, focusing on the proper display of heavy machinery, demonstration of solar systems, and availability of installation accessories.
  • Key Metric: Ensure 80% of visited stores show a 10% sales uplift in power or correct a documented merchandising/installation service issue within one week of the visit.
  • Monitor competitor pricing, especially in the generator market, which is highly sensitive to fuel price fluctuations.

 Campaign Effectiveness & Promotional ROI:

  • Design and execute 1 Power-focused campaign monthly (e.g., "Dry Season Promo," "Solar Switch," "Generator Service Week").
  • Ensure campaigns deliver a minimum Return on Investment (ROI) of 200% or a 15% sales uplift for featured products.
  • Focus on bundled offers (e.g., Inverter + Battery + Solar Panel) to increase average transaction value.

Team Enablement & Product Knowledge:

  • Equip the Front-End Sales Team with technical knowledge to conduct basic load calculations (to recommend the right KVA/wattage) and explain the benefits of hybrid systems.
  • Ensure 95% of the front-end team achieve a passing score (≥80%) on quarterly power product knowledge tests, covering installation requirements and warranty terms.

Market Intelligence & Strategic Input:

  • Submit a monthly market intelligence report covering fuel price impact on generator sales, government policies on renewable energy, competitor installation pricing, and new battery technologies.
  • Ensure at least one strategic recommendation from the report is approved and implemented per quarter.
  • Strategic Initiatives (Xpress Stores, Store Expansion, Installation Services)
  • Collaborate with the retail operations team to ensure power products are safely and optimally merchandised, with working demo units for inverters and solar.
  • Support the development of a centralized installation and after-sales service framework to support both organic and franchise stores.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in  Business Development, Category Management, or Sales Management specifically within the Power sector (Generators, Solar, Inverters, or Electrical Engineering).
  • Proven track record of managing generator or renewable energy brands and navigating the Nigerian power market (including dealing with installation technicians and project sales).
  • Existing network of contacts within the power supply chain (OEM reps for generators, solar panel distributors, and battery manufacturers) is a strong requirement.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Technical Acumen:Deep understanding of electrical load calculations, battery technologies (lead-acid vs. lithium), solar configurations, and generator maintenance cycles.
  • Project Sales Ability:Experience in closing B2B and residential installation projects, not just walk-in retail sales.
  • Commercial & Financial Acumen:Ability to manage margins on heavy, high- value stock that carries significant warehousing costs.
  • Mobility:Willingness to conduct regular store visits within and outside Lagos.

Salary & Compensation

  • Salary, negotiable based on experience
  • Incentive & Commission
  • Allowance
