Role Overview
- The Dialysis Nurse provides clinical and holistic care for patients undergoing dialysis treatment.
- The role involves delivering evidence-based care, monitoring patient conditions, and working independently or within a multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care:
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care for dialysis patients.
- Monitor patient condition, vital signs, laboratory results, and vascular access.
- Administer dialysis-related medications as prescribed.
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans and lifestyle management.
Dialysis Procedure Management:
- Prepare dialysis equipment and ensure machine safety checks are completed.
- Cannulate vascular access (fistula, graft, or catheter) and monitor for complications.
- Monitor patients during dialysis and respond to treatment reactions.
- Conduct post-dialysis assessments and document treatment details.
- Maintain dialysis machines and support water quality monitoring.
Quality & Compliance:
- Follow infection control guidelines and dialysis protocols.
- Maintain accurate and compliant patient documentation.
- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Safety Management:
- Promote patient safety and infection prevention practices.
- Identify and report clinical risks or incidents.
- Respond to emergencies during dialysis treatment.
Communication & Coordination:
- Work with nephrologists and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Provide clear clinical handovers and patient updates.
- Address patient questions regarding treatment and care.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Accurately record patient assessments, treatments, and outcomes.
- Complete incident reports and maintain proper medical records.
Continuous Improvement:
- Participate in training, audits, and professional development.
- Support learning and mentoring of junior staff where applicable.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in dialysis or nephrology nursing.
- Knowledge of infection control and dialysis procedures.
- Experience operating dialysis equipment and managing vascular access.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work flexible shifts.
